Ruth Smith
At Wingham and District Hospital on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, Ruth Smith of Wingham passed away at the age of 93.
The devoted wife of the late Jerry Smith (2022), Ruth was the loving mom of Rick and Faye Smith of Kitchener and Shari and Kevin Good of Wingham.
She was the cherished grandma of Jamie Good, Tanya and Bryce Toll and Danielle and Nick Campbell and the special great-grandma of Julie and Kylie Good, Avery and Sadie Toll and Lenyx and Korlee Campbell.
Ruth will be missed by her nephew Andrew Lockridge and his wife Jennifer.
She was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Elsie Stokes, step-mother Pearl McAllister, grandson Paul Jonah, brothers Fred (Dorothy) Stokes and Don (Jane) Stokes, sister-in-law Gloria (Douglas) Lockridge and nephew Corey Lockridge.
Ruth was born on July 16, 1931 in Goderich to parents Charles Frederick Stokes and Margaret Elsie Rose Martin. She grew up in Goderich and left school in Grade 11 at the age of 16 to look after her mother, who was ill, and continued to do so until her death three years later when Ruth was just 19.
Ruth worked for some time at French Dry Cleaners before meeting Jerry at the pavilion in Goderich and, a year-and-a-half later on May 22, 1954, they were married at Knox Presbyterian Church in Goderich.
Jerry and Ruth moved to Wingham where they lived for over 59 years, raised their family and were very involved in their community. Ruth was an active member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Her working careers included jobs at Jack Alexander’s hardware store, Eaton’s, Sears, Mrs. B’s and, of course, helping Jerry with upholstering.
They loved to travel and Ruth especially loved being at the beach. Ruth and Jerry never missed a Saturday night dance, and we can only imagine that, now in Heaven, they’re back on the dance floor, swaying together once more.
Visitation was held at McBurney Funeral Home, Wingham on Monday, April 7 from 12 p.m. until the funeral service at 1 p.m. Reception followed at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Final resting place, Wingham Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church or the Wingham and District Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.
