Now in its second summer, Goderich’s Square Brew craft brewery started as the passion of one man, helped along by several partners.
Alex Menary fell in love with beer while home brewing in college. From the many yeasts that influence flavour, to the flavourful hops, and the important malt characteristics, he wanted to know it all. Hours were spent reading and learning about the brewing process. Even more time was spent travelling to find the best beer in Ontario, Canada, the United States and Europe.
After attending brewing school in Sunderland, England, Alex returned to Ontario to begin working in the craft beer industry. Alex brewed at both Block 3 Brewery Company in St. Jacob's and Amsterdam Brewery in Toronto.
Growing up in the small town of Milverton, in Perth County, and with family scattered throughout the region, Alex settled on Goderich as the home for his dream of a craft brewery after a weekend at “Uncle Rob’s” on Lake Huron.
Square Brew’s signature beers include: Square One Pilsner, featuring a dry, well-balanced taste, medium body and naturally hazy appearance; Vienna is Waiting, a Vienna lager with medium body, a warm amber colour, a hint of malt and a dry finish; and Hop Miner IPL, an India Pale Lager brewed with a heavy addition of new-world hops near the end of the boil, a lager yeast to ferment it and then a dry hop just before packaging.
Square Brew serves beer by the glass and “Crowlers” to go. You are welcome to bring food to enjoy in their tasting room.
Located at 430 Parsons Court, Goderich the brewery is open seven days a week. You can check out their website at squarebrewco.com for the latest information.
