John Richard "Jack" Cox
John Richard “Jack” Cox of Listowel, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2022. He was in his 98th year.
Jack was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy (Fraser) Cox and the father of Ken and Carol Cox, Calgary, Alberta, Larry and Nancy Cox, Waterloo; Murray and Sylvia Cox, and Jim and Lynn Cox, all of Listowel; Brian and Susan Cox, Henfryn; Bruce and Karyn Cox, Atwood; Dianne Cox and Carolyn Dixon, Barrie, and Karen and Albert Tiw, Burlington. He was loved by his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Jack was predeceased by his sister Helen Poirier, and his brother Arnold in infancy.
Jack was born on June 13, 1925 in Grey Township, the son of Richard and Lilian Cox. Jack grew up helping his father on the farm.
In his early 20s, Jack went to a dance in Brussels where he met Dorothy Fraser. This was the beginning of a lifetime of dancing together.
After a short courtship, Jack and Dorothy were married on Jan. 29, 1949 and spent 72 years together. They lived and farmed the land at a residence on the Moncrieff Sideroad for about 15 years before moving to a farm on the 12th Concession (Cranbrook Road). A strong believer in hard work, Jack also had a construction company building barns, sheds, and houses. In 1981, Jack and Dorothy moved to Atwood, and then later to Listowel, where they spent the remainder of their lives.
Jack loved to dance and play cards and sports. Saturday nights often found Jack and Dorothy attending dances at Family Paradise and later at halls in Atwood and Listowel. If they weren’t dancing, they had friends over to play euchre. In Jack’s later years, he would walk to the Legion daily to play cards. Jack was an avid baseball fan; whether it was playing the game himself, watching his children play, or coaching many teams, he could often be found at the diamonds in the summer.
Jack had a wonderful sense of humour and an infectious smile. He loved his family and took great joy and pride in them. He will be greatly missed as the great man he was.
A private family funeral service was held on Monday, Dec. 5. Pastor Fred Erb officiated.
Interment was at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Ethel.
Memorial donations to Calvary United Church, Listowel, or Caressant Care Residents’ Council would be appreciated.
