Hendrick "Hank" TenPas
Hendrik (Hank) TenPas, long-time Brussels businessman and former village councillor and reeve passed away with his family by his side at Wingham and District Hospital on Sunday, June 4, 2017 following a short illness. He was in his 81st year.
Hank was born Nov. 11, 1936 in Winterswyk, the Netherlands and came to Canada as a teenager with his parents, Bernard and Hanna TenPas. He would spend his life as a builder, operating H. TenPas Construction Ltd. until his retirement.
He married the former Agnes Van Veen and they spent 56 years together. He will be sadly missed by his children Paul TenPas of Toronto, Patricia and Danny McKay of Brussels and Linda TenPas and Brent Russell of Chilliwack, B.C. He was loved by his grandchildren Drew, Krista, Katelyn and Kirk. He was predeceased by his grandson Nick Lang.
He was the dear brother of Teresa and Klaus deVries, Listowel; Wilma and Henk Ensing, Guelph; Diane and Reid Hackwell, London and Ben and Chris TenPas of Brussels. He was predeceased by his brother Albert and by his parents.
He served as a village councillor in the 1980s and was elected reeve in 1986, serving for one term during which he also represented Brussels on Huron County Council. He was always concerned about the welfare of his community and his church, Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Listowel through which he took part in several overseas missions.
Since his retirement he was a valued volunteer driver for OneCare Home and Community Support Services, taking clients for medical appointments, etc.
He was elected to the board of directors of North Huron Publishing Company Inc., publisher of The Citizen, in 2007 and remained active until his untimely death.
Friends were received by the family at the Schimanski Family Funeral Home in Brussels on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held from the Bethel Christian Reformed Church, 345 Elizabeth St. East, Listowel on Thursday, June 8 at 11 a.m.
