Gordon Lyle Hill
Gordon Lyle Hill, Varna, passed away peacefully at Huronview Home, Clinton on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018. He was in his 92nd year.
Gordon was the beloved husband of Ruby (Reid) Hill for 72 years and loving father of Carol and Francis Hunt, Winthrop; Bev and Shirley Hill, Varna and the late Lynda (2013) and George Smith, Seaforth. He was the cherished grandfather of Marion Hunt, Sandra Hunt and Jerry Zwep, Mary and Chris Cardno, Jim and Jeannette Hill, Paul and Monica Hill and great-grandfather of Nic and Cole Zwep, Shanna, Kelsey and Madison Cardno, Lucas and Rachel Hill. Gordon was the dear brother of Marian Gayder and Moe and Denise Hill. He was predeceased by his parents Lyle and Kathleen Hill, grandson Brian Hill, great-grandson Jacob Zwep and siblings Freda and Edward Moran, James Gayder, Frank and Jean Hill, and Allan and Marion Hill.
Gord spent all but two years of his life in Tuckersmith and Stanley Townships. He played an active role in farm organizations, serving as President of both the Ontario Farmer’s Union and the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA). He was one of the leading figures in the restructuring of the OFA beginning in 1969.
He was an active member of the Varna United Church and subsequently the Brucefield Community United Church. He championed many causes both locally and in his community at large. His passion was fishing and his favourite spot was on the Bayfield River behind their farm. For many years he enjoyed hosting his fishing pals at “The Shack”, a cabin that he built beside the river.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life service at the Stanley Community Centre (38572 Mill Rd. Varna, Ontario) on Saturday, Feb. 17. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service at noon. Rev. Randy Banks and Pastor Elly Dow will officiate. Inurnment of cremated remains will be at Baird’s Cemetery in the spring.
Donations to the CNIB or the Canadian Foodgrains Bank would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy. Arrangements entrusted to the Falconer Funeral Homes, Clinton Chapel.
