After a great season locally, the U9 HL Huron Heat team had a tough trip to St. Marys to end the season, going winless and losing their three games in the Western Ontario Girls’ Hockey League championships over the weekend.
The team opened with a 4-0 defeat at the hands of the Zurich Thunder on Friday, April 4, followed by a 3-0 loss to the Stratford Aces on Saturday morning and a 6-2 loss to the Central Perth Predators Blue team later that afternoon. A 3-1 loss to the Sarnia Lady Sting Black team on Sunday ended the team’s tournament, sending them home to Huron County.
Also over the weekend, as part of the Western Ontario Girls’ Hockey League championships, the U13 C Heat took on the Lambeth Lancers in the regional championship game on Saturday afternoon. However, the locals couldn’t find the back of the net and lost to the Lancers by a score of 3-0.
In other action over the weekend, the U13 A Heat beat the Sarnia Lady Sting on the road on Sunday by a score of 6-1, while the U18 BB Heat played an exhibition game with the South Huron Sabres on the road and the Senior team welcomed the Kitchener Lady Rangers to Seaforth, but scores for those games were unavailable at press time.
On Saturday, the U11 C Heat beat the Walkerton Capitals in Seaforth by a score of 6-1 and the U9 C Heat won their exhibition game with the Walkerton Capitals, also in Seaforth, by a score of 3-0. The U15 A Heat lost their exhibition game with the Sarnia Lady Sting in Seaforth by a score of 3-2 and the U9 B Heat welcomed the London Devilettes to Seaforth for an exhibition game, but a score for that game was unavailable at press time.
One night earlier, on Friday, April 4, the U13 A Heat beat the Sarnia Lady Sting in Seaforth by a score of 6-1.
Looking ahead, all that remains is the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA) provincial championships, set for this weekend across the Toronto area.
Five Heat teams will take part. Schedules are now available for three of the five teams.
Beginning on Friday, April 11, the U13 B Heat will play the Huntsville Sting and the Toronto Leaside Wildcats, followed by a game with the Lindsay Lynx the next day.
The U13 C Heat have one game on the schedule for April 11, taking on the Belmont Blazers in Ajax, followed on Saturday by games with the Mooretown Lady Flags and the Stittsville Rockets.
Provincial play for the U9 C Heat team begins on Saturday, April 12 with games against the North Bay Junior Lakers and the Stittsville Rockets, followed by Sunday games with the Owen Sound Ice Hawks and the Woodstock Wildcats.
After the provincials in the Toronto area, with just a week of rest, it will be time for try-outs again, with age groups scheduled for the week of April 21 in Seaforth, followed the next week by some scrimmage games as part of the try-out process.
